Hidden Gems of Haiti and Mexico – Mari Tomizuka & Janet Anthony
By Laurie Monti –
For those who seldom think of extraordinary classical music emerging from Haiti or Mexico, the Janet Anthony-Mari Tomizuka concert in the Benderly series was both humbling and awe-inspiring. Their selections of compositions by Bernier, Perrault, Elie, Racine, Jeanty and Lamothe often echoed ancient indigenous rhythms and melodies, but brought them fast forward with vigor and consummate skill.
How could we not be deeply touched , when this music gifted us with such a positive and affirming view of cultures and nations that are so often presented in negative light by the popular media?
In addition, learning of the humanitarian and music education work that these musicians are doing in Haiti was like an extra gift, deserving of all our support
