The Borderlands Ensemble

The Borderlands Ensemble concert was one of the most enjoyable I’ve attended at Patagonia’s Benderly-Kendall Opera House. The unusual combination of instruments creates a unique sound, and the focus on southwestern and Mexican traditions in contemporary styles makes for a delightful musical experience.

Among the highlights were the opening pieces from Michael Leibowitz’s BADLANDS suite — everyone I spoke to loved the sense of movement, so reminiscent of an old western movie theme. Also quite special was the world premiere of CROSSING by Nubia Jaime-Donjuan, who was on hand for the event. Happily, the lilting, energetic melodies left listeners with a feeling that this particular crossing was a success.
