Another world premiere! The Borderlands Ensemble features Johanna Lundy, horn, Ellen Chamberlain, violin, Joseph Rousos-Hammond, violin, Emily Chao, violin and viola, Robert Chamberlain, cello, Ann Weaver, viola and Jose Luis Puerta, guitar. Hailing from Tucson, Arizona, the Borderlands Ensemble was formed in 2017 to bring a fresh take to classical music. The group consists of a string quartet, horn, and guitar and their high-energy and engaging performances let go of the restrictive formality of classical music traditions. The ensemble is growing a repertoire of unique music by Mexican and American composers.
Today’s program includes music by Charles Daniels Torres, a highly accomplished composer from Mexico City who fuses driving rock rhythms with lush string harmonies; “Badlands” by Michael Leibowitz, based on the deserts of Arizona; and a world premiere by Hermosillo-born composer Nubia Jaime Donjuan, whose music blends traditional Mexican melodies and rhythms with classical style and form. There are a few more surprises as well — you do not want to miss this event!
